How to play Fiveaside

Fiveaside is a free browser football game — one short, real-time five-a-side match against a credible AI side, ending in a shareable scoreline card. Here is everything you need to play.

What is Fiveaside?

Fiveaside is an arcade five-a-side football game that runs entirely in your web browser — no download, no account, nothing to install. Each side has five players: a goalkeeper and four outfielders. You take on one credible AI team across a single short match on one hand-styled street-futsal pitch. It is built for a quick, satisfying game you can pick up in seconds on a phone or a laptop.

How a match works

A match is two sixty-second halves, shown on the HUD as football minutes from 0’ to 90’. After every goal the conceding side kicks off again. If the scores are level at full time, the game goes to golden goal — the next goal wins. When it is all over you get a final match card with the scoreline, both clubs, and a one-line summary of how the game went.

Controls

On a phone: use the left-thumb joystick to move and the two right-thumb buttons to Pass and Shoot. Hold the Shoot button to power up the strike, then release.

On a desktop: move with WASD or the arrow keys, press J to pass, and hold Space to power a shot, releasing when the ring around your player is full.

You never pick who to control: the game auto-switches to whichever of your outfield players is nearest the ball, so you can focus on the play, not on juggling a roster.

The six sides and how each one plays

Every side in Fiveaside has its own playing style, and it is not decoration — the style changes what the AI actually does with the ball, how many players come to tackle you, how high the defence sits and how early it shoots. It applies to your side too, so the club you pick decides how your four teammates behave. Six sides means six genuinely different matches.

Harbour Athletic — Patient build-up
A patient side. It moves the ball out of pressure long before a tackle arrives and declines the long-range shot, so it arrives in front of your keeper with the ball under control. Press it in pairs — left alone it will pass around you all match.
Ember FC — High press
The most aggressive style in the game: a second player joins the tackle and the back line pushes up behind it, so you get almost no time on the ball. Beat the first presser with one quick pass and the space behind their high line is enormous.
Verde Rovers — Wing overloads
This side hugs the touchlines, pulling your defenders apart to open the middle for a runner. The walls are its friend, because a wide ball rebounds back into play rather than going out. Stay central and make it cross rather than chasing it into the corner.
Solaris United — Direct and fearless
A shoot-on-sight side that will strike from well outside the arc rather than build up, which makes it wasteful but genuinely dangerous the moment your keeper is even slightly off their line. Deny it a clean sight of goal and it will waste possession.
Frost City — Deep block, fast break
It defends with everyone behind the ball, so there is almost never a gap to shoot through, and then it springs forward faster than any other side the moment it steals possession. Keep one player home, or your first misplaced pass is a goal against you.
Marigold SC — Balanced
The neutral style: one player presses, the shape holds its normal height and width, and it shoots from sensible range. It is the fairest test of your own play and the best side to learn the controls against.

The styles read each other well: a high press is torn open by one pass over the top, a deep block is best beaten by patience and width, and a shoot-on-sight side hands you the ball if you simply stand between it and the goal. Pick the side whose teammates suit you and the opposing style becomes the puzzle to solve.
